With food shortages and hunger warnings from relief organizations due to Israel’s onslaught, the US declared late last week that its forces will construct a dock to deliver aid to civilians in Gaza.
Months ago, the nearly daily phone calls came to an end. The leaders are now openly arguing over Israel’s war on Hamas, which is the source of their tensions between Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu.
The head of Israel detected treachery. “It doesn’t help to the extent that Hamas thinks there’s daylight between us,” Netanyahu said on Fox News on Monday. Both the US and the EU have classified Hamas as a terrorist group.
The public back and forth marked a significant shift from Biden’s vocal support of Israel during the bloodiest Hamas strikes in the nation’s history on October 7. Netanyahu and the US president collaborated closely to provide broad military and diplomatic support. But it is now impossible to hide the tensions between the Israeli leader and his most significant ally over the number of civilian deaths, with over 30,000 dead reported by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry and Israel preparing an attack on Rafah, the last significant city in the enclave where residents are seeking refuge.
On Thursday, Biden was overheard telling a lawmaker over a hot mic that he and Netanyahu were having a “come-to-Jesus” conversation. That occurred only a few days after his administration held high-level talks in Washington with Benny Gantz, the war cabinet member of Israel and chief political adversary of Netanyahu.

As it intervenes to actively provide humanitarian relief, the Biden administration has for the time being continued to supply Israel with weapons and other forms of support.
According to Netanyahu, Israel will eventually attack Rafah, the southern Gaza city, which is believed to be home to 8,000 Hamas fighters, the organization’s leaders, and the remaining 134 Israeli prisoners.
Biden is against Israel’s progress because he believes there will be too many civilian casualties.
